A warrior forged through lived experience, sacred tradition, and 40 years of elite performance. Champion athlete. Pioneer coach. Founder. Healer. Knowledge Keeper. Dr. Allan Zachariah has walked every path — and elevated everyone he's met along the way.
Dr. Allan Zachariah — known across Turtle Island as Zack — is a Grassroots Oshkaabewis, Traditional Knowledge Keeper & Peacekeeper, Fire Keeper, Ceremonial Pipe Carrier, Drum Carrier, and Scorpius — Keeper of Sacred Things, and Ceremonial Leader. His name carries weight in every circle — the sports arena, the university lecture hall, the ceremonial fire, and the counselling lodge.
◆ His Teacher & Elder
Dr. Zachariah received all of his traditional ceremonial honours under the guidance of his teacher, mentor, and Elder — the late Vern "ASIN" Harper, Cree Elder and Holy Man. Elder Harper — whose traditional name Asin means "Stone" or "Grandfather" in Cree — was one of the most respected Indigenous spiritual leaders in Canadian history. Also born and raised in Regent Park, Toronto, Elder Harper was a Heyoka (sacred holy man), medicine man, decorated Korean War veteran, and lifelong champion of Indigenous rights. Known across Turtle Island as the "Urban Elder," he dedicated his entire life to healing, ceremony, and the protection of First Nations people.
Dr. Allan Zachariah served as his War Chief — a bond forged in tradition, ceremony, and the sacred responsibilities of their people. Elder Vern "ASIN" Harper passed on May 12, 2018, and his teachings live on through every ceremony Dr. Zachariah carries forward.
Raised in Regent Park, Toronto, and deeply rooted in his Mohawk heritage, he rose to become one of the most respected Indigenous leaders of his generation across Turtle Island.
As a former international professional football champion, a pioneering pro hockey coach, a recognized Knowledge Keeper at two major universities, and a ceremonial leader who has guided thousands through healing — Dr. Zachariah is not just accomplished. He is a once-in-a-generation figure.
In 2018, Dr. Zachariah founded the Debwe Society — a groundbreaking institution that introduced a revolutionary new model of education. For the first time, grassroots Indigenous knowledge and mainstream academic traditions were brought together as equal partners, each validating and honouring the other.
Established as a formal partnership between a group of university professors and Dr. Zachariah as Traditional Knowledge Keeper and War Chief, the Debwe Society operates on a powerful governance principle: academics ensure curriculum integrity, while the War Chief ensures cultural, traditional, and ceremonial integrity.
This model mirrors the traditional Haudenosaunee governance structure — where the War Chief presents a problem to the Clan Mothers for consideration, and they advise on how to address it. Ancient wisdom, modern application.
In September 2024, the Universal Institute of Professional Management conferred upon Allan Zachariah an Honorary Doctorate (Dr. HC) in Sports and Grassroots Medicine.
The honour recognizes his outstanding achievements, his commitment to excellence, and his profound impact on the lives he has touched — and his work as founder of the Debwe Society, which brings together university professors, professionals, and grassroots Knowledge Keepers to acknowledge and validate each other.
His role as a community leader is marked by integrity, compassion, and a tireless commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others.
A former international professional football champion — 9 consecutive titles across 12 years on the world stage. The first Mohawk Warrior to be hired as Head Coach of a professional hockey team. Over 40 years developing elite athletes of all ages across football, hockey, basketball, track, weightlifting, and strength & conditioning. Qualified for D1 professional sports evaluations. As Ceremonial Leader, Oshkaabewis, Pipe Carrier, and Drum Carrier, Dr. Zachariah carries the sacred responsibility of the Haudenosaunee people. Founder of the Debwe Society — a first-of-its-kind educational model merging Indigenous grassroots wisdom with academic institutions. Recognized at Toronto Metropolitan University and McMaster University. A protector. A keeper of the fire. A guardian of the next generation.
As Director of Ceremonial Services at Carrying Place Counselling Services, Zack bridges clinical mental health care and traditional Indigenous healing. Guided by the sacred Medicine Lodge framework, he has guided thousands through complex trauma, addiction recovery, intergenerational trauma, grief, and spiritual reconnection — serving First Nations, Inuit across the GTA and Turtle Island.
Dr. Zachariah has dedicated his life not only to elite performance — but to being a protector, educator, helper, and listener to youth, families, and community members across Toronto, Ontario, and Turtle Island.
Guided by a lifetime of service to his people, Zack channels sacred tradition and ceremonial leadership into proactive health transformation — building body, mind, and spirit in young people before crisis has a chance to take hold.
Through physical fitness, spirit-building, and ceremonial guidance, he has helped thousands of youth, men and women across Turtle Island live healthier, fuller lives.
Reintegration & second chances. Zack helps BIPOC community members returning from incarceration find a new path, partnering with community organizations and programs to create real, lasting change.
"Condition the mind to embrace the pain, dedication & accountability needed to awaken the mind, body, and spiritual endurance to compete at a high elite level."
